Phone Water Damage: What To Do in the First 30 Minutes
Water damage is the repair where time matters most. At our Dublin workshop we have brought back phones that went into the Liffey, the washing machine and, more often than anything else, the toilet. The ones we save usually belong to people who did the right things in the first half hour. Here is exactly what to do.
Do these five things immediately
- Get it out and power it off. Electricity plus water is what kills phones, not the water alone. Hold the power button and shut it down now, and do not "just check if it still works".
- Do not charge it. Plugging in a wet phone is the fastest way to turn a survivable dunk into a dead motherboard.
- Remove what you can. Case off, SIM tray out. This opens drainage paths and protects your SIM.
- Dry the outside and keep it upright. Dab with a towel; gravity helps water find the way out of the charging port rather than deeper inside.
- Get it to a repair bench the same day if you can. Corrosion starts within hours. A professional clean inside beats anything you can do at home.
The myths that make it worse
- Rice does not work. It dries the outside slightly and does nothing about the mineral deposits already forming on the board. It also gets starch dust into the ports.
- Hair dryers push water deeper. Heat also damages the battery and the display adhesive.
- "It survived, it's fine" is premature. Corrosion is slow. A phone that swam on Saturday often dies three weeks later, when the damage is much harder to reverse.
What a professional water treatment actually involves
At iMEND, water-damage treatment starts with a free diagnostic. We open the device, disconnect the battery, and clean the logic board properly, ultrasonic cleaning where needed, to stop corrosion before it spreads. Then we test every subsystem: charging, cameras, speakers, microphones, screen and touch. You get an honest verdict and a firm price before any repair work begins, and our no fix, no fee promise applies: if we can't save it, you pay nothing.
What does water damage repair cost in Dublin?
Water damage treatment at iMEND starts from €69. If the diagnostic finds that parts were damaged, for example the battery or screen, we quote you the exact price before doing anything. Most water-damaged phones we see within 24 hours can be saved; after a week untreated, the odds drop sharply.
Seawater is an emergency
Salt water corrodes many times faster than fresh water. If your phone went into the sea at Dollymount or Sandycove, treat it as urgent: power off, rinse nothing, and get it to a bench the same day.
