On the bench

What we test before you get it back.

Fitting the part is the middle of the job, not the end of it. Every device goes through the same checks before it is handed back, and they are the same checks whether you paid eighty euro or four hundred.

The checks every device gets.

Touch across the whole panel, not the middle of it. Most touch faults after a screen repair show up at the very edge, where the digitiser sits closest to the frame and where a trapped speck of glass will press on the flex.

Every button, every sensor, both cameras, both microphones, the earpiece and the speaker. It takes a couple of minutes and it catches the thing nobody thinks to check, which is usually the proximity sensor: the screen fails to go dark against your ear and you hang up on people with your cheek.

Then a charge test on the port and a call placed and received. A phone that passes on the bench and fails on the way home has almost always failed one of those two, and both are quick.

  • Touch response across the full panel, edge to edge
  • Face ID or the fingerprint reader, on the phone it came off
  • Proximity and ambient light sensors
  • Front and rear cameras, plus flash
  • Earpiece, speaker and both microphones
  • Every physical button and the alert slider
  • Wi-Fi, mobile data and a real call, placed and received
  • A charge test on the port with our cable and yours

What changes by repair.

After a battery, we check health and cycle count read correctly, then put the phone under load for a while rather than handing it back at rest. A cell that is going to misbehave does it under load, not sitting on a counter.

After a charging port, we test with a slow charger and a fast one, and with your own cable as well as ours. Ports frequently pass on a bench cable and fail on the frayed one in your bag, and it is better to find that out here.

After liquid damage, the device stays with us longer and gets checked again the next day. Corrosion is a process rather than an event, and a board that reads clean an hour after cleaning can behave differently once it has been powered up and warm for a day.

Sealing, and the thing nobody mentions.

Any repair that opens a phone breaks the original water seal. We replace the adhesive gasket on every device that came with one, which restores the seal as well as it can be restored outside a factory.

What we will not do is tell you the phone is still rated to the original IP figure, because no independent repair can honestly claim that and neither can most authorised ones. It is sealed properly. It is not a new phone.

Screws go back where they came from. On several models the screws differ in length by a millimetre between positions and putting a long one in a short hole punches through to the board underneath, which is a repair that arrives at our bench from somewhere else about once a month.

What the testing is backed by.

A 360-day warranty on the part and the workmanship. If the same fault comes back and it was not caused by new damage, we do it again and you pay nothing.

A record of what was done. Every status change on your repair is written by the database itself rather than typed by whoever was at the counter, so the history you see when you check your reference is the same history we see.

And a person to talk to who was in the building when it happened. The bench is at 4 Richmond Road, not at a depot in another country, which is the whole reason we can check something again the next day.

Asked all the time

Asked all the time.

Most phone screen and battery repairs are 15 to 45 minutes while you wait, because the testing is built into that time rather than added to it. Liquid damage and board-level work take longer and we tell you the day.

It is resealed with a new adhesive gasket, which is as good as a seal gets outside a factory. We will not tell you it still meets the original IP rating, because no independent repair can honestly claim that.

Bring it in. If it is the same fault and it was not caused by new damage, we repair it again free under the 360-day warranty on both the part and the workmanship.

Everything, every time. The proximity sensor is the one that catches people out, because a phone that fails it hangs up on callers with your cheek and you would not find that until you were out the door.

Because corrosion is a process. A board that reads clean an hour after cleaning can behave differently once it has been powered and warm for a day, so we check it again the next day rather than hand it back on the strength of one test.

You can wait in the shop and most people do, since most repairs are done inside 45 minutes. The bench itself is not a public area, for the same reason a kitchen is not.

Yes, if you have it with you, and it is worth bringing. A port that passes on our cable and fails on the frayed one in your bag is a problem you would rather find at the counter.

Your reference and surname on the repair status page show every stage with its timestamp. That history is written by the database when the status changes, not typed in afterwards, so it is the same record we hold.
