A screen, battery or charging port repair does not touch your storage, so nothing should happen to your files. The reason to back up anyway is that a device which is already faulty can fail further at any moment, including before we have touched it.
iPhone: Settings, your name, iCloud, iCloud Backup, Back Up Now. Android: Settings, Google, Backup. Either runs in the background while you finish your coffee.
If the screen is cracked but the phone still works, do it now rather than after. A cracked panel can lose touch response entirely without warning, and then the backup is no longer possible.
What to bring, and what to leave.
Bring the device, your charging cable if you have a charging fault, and the case off. If the phone is under a manufacturer warranty or you have had it repaired before, mention it at the counter, because a previous repair changes where we look first.
Leave the SIM in or take it out, it makes no difference to us. Take out a memory card if there is one, because it is the one thing we would rather not be responsible for.
You do not need proof of purchase for a repair. You do need photo identification if you are selling or trading a device in, which is a legal requirement rather than a shop policy.

If it got wet, stop.
Do not turn it on. Do not plug it in to see if it charges. Do not put it in rice, which does nothing except get starch into the ports. Every one of those does more damage than the liquid did.
The water is rarely what kills a board. What kills it is current running through a wet or corroding circuit, and every attempt to power it up sends current through it again.
Turn it off if it is on, leave it off, and bring it in the same day if you can. Time matters here more than on any other repair, because corrosion keeps going while the phone sits in a drawer.
