Repair or Replace? When Fixing Your Phone Beats Buying New

Every day someone walks into our Drumcondra workshop holding a phone and asks the same question: is this still worth fixing? Sometimes the honest answer is no, and we say so. But far more often, repair wins by a wide margin. Here is the simple way to decide.

The 50% rule

If the repair costs less than half of what a comparable replacement would cost you, repair it. A €99 screen on a phone that would cost €400 to replace is an easy yes. A €250 board repair on a phone worth €200 is an easy no, and a good shop will tell you that before taking your money.

Real numbers from a Dublin bench

ProblemTypical repairTypical replacement
Cracked iPhone 13 screen€99–€169€500+ used, €700+ new
Tired iPhone 11 battery€49–€79€300+ used
Samsung S23 charging port€49–€69€450+ used
MacBook Air battery€109–€149€1,100+ new

Batteries are the standout: a €60 battery replacement routinely adds two years of life to a phone that feels finished. Most "my phone is dying" phones we see just need power, not replacement.

When replacement genuinely wins

  • The repair quote is more than half the phone's replacement value.
  • The phone no longer receives security updates and you rely on it for banking.
  • There are multiple expensive faults at once, for example a smashed screen plus board damage.

In those cases, consider a certified pre-owned phone rather than new: tested hardware, a fraction of the price, and a warranty. We sell them at the same bench that repairs them, and you can trade in your old device against one.

The environmental maths

Manufacturing a new smartphone produces roughly 60 to 80kg of CO2 and consumes rare-earth materials; keeping a working phone alive for two more years is one of the most effective green choices a consumer can make. The EU's Right to Repair Directive (2024/1799) exists precisely because repair, not replacement, is the better default. Every repair keeps a device out of landfill.
