Two different technologies, two different prices
An LCD has a backlight behind a liquid crystal layer. Every pixel is lit by the same lamp, which is why black on an LCD is really very dark grey. An OLED panel has no backlight at all: each pixel makes its own light and a black pixel is simply switched off.
OLED panels cost more to manufacture, and that difference lands directly on the repair price. It is why an iPhone 11 screen is one of the cheaper repairs we do and an iPhone 11 Pro, released the same day, is not.
Why the whole assembly gets replaced
On almost every phone made in the last decade the glass, the touch layer and the display are laminated into a single part. Separating them is possible, but it needs the panel heated, split, cleaned and re-bonded under vacuum, and the labour costs more than the assembly saves.
So when the glass cracks and the display underneath still works perfectly, the price is still the price. That surprises people and it is worth saying plainly.
Burn-in is an OLED thing
If you can see a faint permanent ghost of the keyboard, the status bar or a game overlay, that is burn-in. Individual pixels have aged at different rates because they have been lit at different intensities for thousands of hours.
It cannot be fixed in software, no matter what an app claims. Replacing the panel clears it completely, and it is not covered by warranty because it is wear rather than a fault.
What genuine actually means here
We fit genuine Apple and Samsung service parts where they are available for the model, and premium aftermarket panels where they are not. Both are told to you before we start, and the price reflects which one is going in.
An aftermarket OLED is not automatically worse, but it is not the same part, and you should be told which you are buying. A shop that will not tell you is worth walking away from.
