Microsoldering

Board-level repair in Dublin.

The repairs that get refused rather than attempted. A phone with no signs of life, a board that has had water sitting on it, a laptop nobody has opened. This is the bench with a microscope on it.

What board-level actually means.

Most phone repair is component swapping. A screen unclips, a battery lifts out, a charging port comes off as a flex assembly. It is skilled work but the parts are designed to be replaced, and any competent shop can do it.

Board level is the layer underneath. The logic board is a stack of chips soldered to a multi-layer circuit board, and when one of those fails, or a trace between them breaks, there is no part to swap. The fault has to be found on the board and repaired on the board, under a microscope, with hot air and a soldering iron with a tip finer than a pin.

That is a different job with different equipment, and it is why the honest answer from most shops is that the device is beyond repair. It usually is beyond their repair. It is often not beyond repair.

The faults that come here.

A phone that will not power on at all, and does not respond to a charger or a computer. That is most often a short on one of the power rails, and finding it is a matter of measuring rather than guessing.

Charging that stopped after a bad cable or a bad charger. If a new port has already been fitted and the phone still will not charge, the fault is upstream of the port: usually the charging IC or the tristar chip, both of which are replaceable.

A screen that lights up but shows nothing, or shows an image with no backlight. Backlight circuits fail through a blown filter or a damaged driver line, both cheap components once the fault is located.

Water damage that has been left. Corrosion spreads under chips where a visual inspection cannot see it, and the repair is a full disassembly, an ultrasonic clean and then whatever the board needs afterwards.

Laptops with no signs of life, no charge indicator, or a machine that powers on and shuts down seconds later. Same discipline, larger board.

How the job actually runs.

The diagnostic comes first and it is free. That means the device is opened, the board is inspected under magnification, and the power rails are measured. Nothing is quoted before that, because a quote given without opening a device is a guess.

If the fault is found and it is economic to repair, you get a firm price and a realistic time. Board work is not a fifteen-minute job; most of it is a two to five working day turnaround, and we say which before you leave the device.

If the board is beyond sensible repair, you are told that and charged nothing. That happens: a board that has been submerged in salt water for a week, or one that a previous repair has already cooked, sometimes cannot be brought back. Saying so is part of the service.

Data, and what we can promise.

The most common reason people want board-level work is not the device. It is what is on it. Photos that were never backed up, messages, work files.

A board repair is often the only route to that data, because a phone that will not power on cannot be read by any recovery tool. Bring the board back to life and the data comes with it.

What we cannot promise is a result. Board work has an honest failure rate, higher than a screen replacement and much higher on a device that has been wet for a long time. We will tell you the odds as we see them before you decide, and if it does not work there is nothing to pay.

Asked all the time

Asked all the time.

Not necessarily. Most shops do component-level work only, so a fault on the board itself reads to them as unfixable, which for them it is. Bring it in and we will look at it under a microscope for nothing, and if the answer is genuinely no you will not be charged for hearing it.

It depends entirely on the fault, which is why there is no price list for it. What we can say is that the diagnostic is free, the price is firm once the fault is found, and there is nothing to pay if we cannot repair it.

Longer than a screen. Most board work runs two to five working days, because the fault has to be found before it can be repaired and some of it needs parts ordered in. You are told the estimate before you leave the device.

Often, yes, and it is the most common reason people ask for one. A phone that will not power on cannot be read by any data recovery tool, so bringing the board back is usually the only route. It is not guaranteed and we will say what we think the odds are.

Yes. MacBooks and Windows laptops both, for no-power faults, charging circuits, and boards that have had liquid on them. The discipline is the same; the board is bigger.

The 360-day warranty covers the part and the workmanship on any completed repair, board-level included. It does not cover a new fault elsewhere on a board that was already damaged, and we will explain that distinction before we start.

Sometimes, and the time matters more than anything else. Salt keeps corroding after the device looks dry, so a phone brought in the same day has a far better chance than one that sat in a drawer for a fortnight. Do not charge it and do not put it in rice.
