Laptops, MacBooks and Surface devices, repaired at our Drumcondra bench rather than sent to a depot. Free diagnostic first, and the honest answer about whether a machine is worth fixing.
Mon to Sat 10 to 6Screens, batteries, keyboards, charging circuits, storage, and the thermal work that fixes far more machines than people expect. On the Apple side that is MacBook Air and Pro across the Intel and Apple silicon generations; on the Windows side Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer and Microsoft Surface.
The single most common laptop job on this bench is not a failure at all. It is a machine that has never been opened, with years of dust packed into the heatsink and thermal paste that has dried out, throttling itself to avoid overheating. A clean and repaste makes it quiet and quick again and it is one of the cheapest things we do.
The second most common is a battery, and the giveaway is usually the trackpad rather than the battery meter: on most designs the cell sits directly underneath it, so a swelling battery stops the trackpad clicking before anything else goes wrong.
Manufacturers reuse model names across very different machines, and two laptops sold as the same model in the same year often take different panels, keyboards and batteries. So the part is chosen against the number on the machine's own label rather than the name on the lid.
On a Dell that is the Service Tag on the underside, seven characters. On an HP it is the product number printed as P/N. On a Lenovo it is the machine type and model. On a Mac it is the A-number engraved on the case. Bring the machine, or send a photo of that label, and we can confirm the part before you commit to anything.
This is also why a price quoted over the phone from a model name is a guess. We would rather see the label.
A laptop that will not start has more possible causes than a phone, and they present identically from outside. A failed charger, a finished battery, a thermal shutdown and a board fault all look like a machine that will not turn on.
The diagnostic measures charge behaviour on a known good supply and current draw at rest and under load, which tells the four apart before anything is opened or ordered. Bring the charger with the machine; a failed charger is far more common than a failed laptop and it is the first thing we rule out.
It is free, and there is no fee if we cannot fix it.
When the battery, the keyboard and the fans are all finished at once on a machine that has stopped receiving security updates. That is the point where a repair is money spent on a device with a fixed end date, and we will say so.
When the data is what matters rather than the machine. Sometimes recovering the files and moving on is the right call, and it is a different and usually cheaper job.
We would rather lose the repair than sell one that does not make sense. The honest answer costs you nothing to hear.
Yes. Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer and Microsoft Surface alongside MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and iMac. The diagnostic and the warranty are the same either way.
Usually not. Dust packed into the heatsink and dried thermal paste make a machine throttle itself, which reads as slow and loud. A clean and repaste is one of the cheapest jobs we do and it fixes a large share of these.
Almost always a swelling battery underneath it. Stop charging the machine and bring it in; that one is genuinely urgent, and it is a battery rather than a trackpad.
Often, yes, and say that is the priority before we start. Recovering the data and recovering the machine are sometimes different routes and the wrong order can cost you both.
Because manufacturers reuse model names across very different machines. The number on the underside decides which panel, keyboard and battery the machine takes, and the name on the lid does not.
Usually, on a machine that is otherwise healthy and still getting updates. Check the backlight first: a screen that shows a faint image under a torch has a backlight fault, which is a fraction of the price of a panel.
Within reason, yes. Phones, tablets, laptops, watches and games consoles are the everyday work, and board-level repair covers a good deal of what people mean by electronics repair. If it has a screen, a battery or a board, ask.
