Phone overheating

Warm during a game is normal. Hot while doing nothing is not, and it is usually one of three things.

What causes it

  • A battery at the end of its life, which generates heat charging and discharging
  • Dust in the cooling path on anything with a fan
  • Thermal paste that has dried out, on laptops and consoles more than three years old
  • Something running in the background that will not sleep

What to do right now

  • Note whether it is hot while idle or only under load
  • Take the case off and see whether it still happens
  • On a laptop or console, check whether the fan is audible and whether the vents are clear
  • Stop charging it if it is hot enough to be uncomfortable to hold
Which one is yours

What you are seeing.

The same complaint covers several different faults. Find the line that matches and you have already narrowed it down.

  • Hot while chargingCommon and usually the charger or the case rather than the phone. Heat is what ages a battery fastest, so it is worth sorting.
  • Hot doing nothing in your pocketSomething is running that you cannot see. Often software rather than hardware.
  • Hot and the battery drops fastThe two travel together. A worn cell works harder and makes more heat doing it.
  • Hot enough to show a temperature warningStop using it and take the case off. If it does it repeatedly, bring it in.
  • Hot around the camera when filmingNormal on most phones for long 4K recording. Not a fault on its own.
  • Hot and it shut downWorth a diagnostic. Repeated thermal shutdowns are not something to live with.
Before you spend anything

Work out which one it is.

Most overheating is either software or a charger, and both are free to rule out before anybody opens anything.

IfIt started after an update or a new app
Check Settings, Battery for what is using it. A background process will heat a perfectly healthy phone.
IfIt only happens on charge
Try a different plug and cable, and take the case off. Fast charging in a thick case in a warm room is most of it.
IfIt happens with a specific app
Not a hardware fault. Update or remove the app before paying anybody.
IfIt is hot and the battery is old
The battery is the likely cause and the cheapest fix.
IfIt is a laptop or a console rather than a phone
Almost always dust in the heatsink and dried thermal paste. A clean and repaste is the fix and it is one of the cheapest things we do.
IfIt got hot and then would not turn on
Stop charging it and bring it in. That sequence is worth a proper diagnostic.

If none of these is clearly yours, that is what the free diagnostic is for. It costs nothing and it is the step that stops people paying for the wrong repair.

The diagnostic

What we check at the bench.

  • Idle current draw, which finds a device that is not sleeping
  • Battery temperature and condition under load
  • The cooling path, on anything with a fan
  • Board temperatures under a thermal camera where the cause is not obvious
The money

What it costs.

Ruling out the charger and the software costs nothing. Where it is the battery, that is a fixed price per model; where it is a laptop or console clean, that is priced on the relevant repair page.

Whatever it turns out to be, you get the price before anything is opened, and there is no fee if we cannot fix it. Every completed repair carries a 360-day warranty on the part we fitted and the work we did.

Asked all the time

Common questions.

A warm phone is normal. A phone too hot to hold comfortably, repeatedly, is not, and a swelling battery is genuinely urgent. Stop charging it and bring it in.

Not on its own. Heat does the damage and fast charging makes heat. Charging cool matters more than charging slowly.

Dust in the fan and heatsink, plus thermal paste that has dried out. It is the most common laptop job we do and among the cheapest.

It is fine occasionally. Doing it every day, in a case, while fast charging, is what shortens a battery's life.

A battery at the end of its life, which generates heat charging and discharging. Dust in the cooling path on anything with a fan

We quote it after a free diagnostic, because the price depends on what we find. No fix, no fee, so if we cannot repair it you pay nothing.

On a laptop or console that is almost always dust packed into the heatsink, plus thermal paste that has dried out after a few years. Both are serviceable. Left alone the heat shortens the life of everything around it.

That points at the battery or something drawing current it should not. Worth a free diagnostic rather than waiting, particularly if it is also losing charge quickly.

For common faults on common models, yes, and the price is on the page you are reading. For anything with no clear symptom, liquid damage especially, nobody can price it honestly without opening it, so we do that for free first.

Card or cash at the counter when you collect. You get a firm price before any work starts.

Bring it in and we do it again at no cost, for 360 days from the repair, on the part and the workmanship both. That does not cover new accidental damage, which we will always be straight with you about.

For most screen and battery work, 15 to 45 minutes, and people wait in the shop. Anything that has to come apart further, or that we want to run for a while before handing back, we tell you the day rather than guess at an hour.
