120Hz, ProMotion and LTPO: what the numbers do

The short answer

Refresh rate is how many times a second the screen redraws. 60Hz is standard, 120Hz is smoother to scroll and costs battery. LTPO lets a panel drop to 1Hz when nothing is moving, which is how always-on displays run all day without flattening the phone.

What the number means

A 60Hz screen redraws sixty times a second. A 120Hz screen does it twice as often, so anything moving, which in practice means scrolling, appears in twice as many positions on its way past. That is the whole effect, and it is more noticeable than the specification sounds.

The cost is power. Every redraw takes energy, both in the panel and in the processor that has to produce the frame, so a phone running at 120Hz all day uses meaningfully more battery than the same phone at 60Hz.

That trade-off is what LTPO solves.

LTPO, and why always-on displays became possible

LTPO is a way of making the panel's backplane so the refresh rate can be varied dynamically and over a very wide range, typically from 120Hz down to 1Hz, without the panel flickering as it changes.

So the phone runs at 120Hz while you scroll, drops to 60Hz for a video, and falls to 1Hz when you put it on the table showing a clock. An always-on display that redraws once a second costs almost nothing.

This is why an always-on display appears on the Pro phones and not the standard ones in several ranges: it is the panel technology rather than a software decision.

Does a replacement screen keep it

A genuine or service panel does, because it is the same panel. A premium aftermarket panel for a 120Hz phone is made to run at 120Hz and generally does.

Where it goes wrong is a cheaper tier. A hard OLED or an incell LCD sold as a replacement for a 120Hz phone runs at 60Hz, and the phone will happily use it without complaining. Nothing warns you; the screen just feels slightly less fluid than it did, in a way that is hard to name.

Whether you should care

If your phone has it and you are replacing the screen, yes, because losing it is a downgrade you paid for without being told.

If you are choosing a phone, it is a genuine quality-of-life difference and it is not the most important one. A good battery and a bright screen matter more day to day.

And if you want the battery back, most phones let you cap the rate at 60Hz in settings. On a phone with a tired cell that is one of the more effective changes you can make.
