Repair warranties: what any honest one covers, and what none does

The short answer

A repair warranty covers the part that was fitted and the workmanship that fitted it. It does not cover new accidental damage, liquid damage, or an unrelated fault that appears afterwards. Any warranty claiming to cover those is either misdescribed or not going to be honoured.

The two things it covers

The part. If the screen, battery or port we fitted fails on its own, that is ours to put right at no charge.

The workmanship. If a connector was not seated, an adhesive seal was not properly refitted, or something adjacent was disturbed during the job, that is ours too.

Ours runs 360 days on both, and it applies whichever grade of part you chose. A cheaper tier does not buy a shorter guarantee here, because if we did not think a part would last we would not have offered it.

The three things no honest one covers

That last one is where disputes usually start, and it is why a proper diagnostic tests everything rather than the one thing you mentioned. A device tested end to end on the way out is a device where a later fault can honestly be separated from the work done.

  • New accidental damage. A phone dropped again after the repair is a new repair, not a warranty claim.
  • Liquid damage. Corrosion continues afterwards in ways nobody can predict, so a warranty on it would be a promise no shop could keep.
  • An unrelated fault. A charging port failing three months after a screen repair is not the screen repair, and we will show you the difference on the device rather than assert it.

Questions worth asking any shop

A shop that cannot answer those in a sentence each is not offering you a warranty so much as a hope. Ours is written up at /policies/warranty and it says the same thing there as at the counter.

  • How long, and does it cover the part and the labour or only one of them?
  • Does it change depending on which grade of part I choose?
  • What do I need to claim: a receipt, a reference number, the original packaging?
  • Does the warranty transfer if I sell the phone?
  • What happens if the same fault comes back twice?
  • Is it written down anywhere I can read before I agree?

How a claim actually works here

  1. Bring the device inNo form. Your phone number finds the job, and the repair reference if you have it makes it quicker.
  2. We look at itAnd establish whether it is the repair we did or something new. That distinction is shown on the device, not asserted.
  3. If it is ours, we put it rightAt no charge, including the part and the labour.
  4. If it is not, we tell you whyAnd quote the new repair, which you are free to decline.
  5. If we disagreeSay so. /complaints sets out what happens next and where to go independently of us.

Statutory rights sit underneath all of this

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2022 a service must be provided with reasonable care and skill. That is a legal right, it applies whatever a shop writes on a docket, and no warranty replaces it.

So a warranty is a promise on top of the law rather than instead of it, and any shop presenting its warranty as the limit of what you are entitled to is misdescribing the situation.

The CCPC gives free independent advice if you want to know where you stand without asking the shop you are in dispute with.

Common questions.

The part we fitted and the workmanship that fitted it, for 360 days, whichever grade of part you chose. It does not cover new accidental damage, liquid damage, or an unrelated fault that appears afterwards.

Because corrosion keeps progressing after a repair in ways nobody can predict. A warranty on it would be a promise no shop could keep, which is why no honest one offers it.

No. A phone dropped again after a repair is new accidental damage and a new repair. That is the same limit any honest repair warranty has.

It helps and it is not essential. Your phone number finds the job here, and the repair reference makes it quicker.

Not here. It is 360 days on every grade, because if we did not think a part would last we would not have offered it in the first place.
