Camera blurry, or will not focus

The lens cover and the camera itself are two different parts at two very different prices.

What causes it

  • A cracked lens cover over the camera, which is a small cheap part
  • A failed autofocus motor in the module, which sounds like a rattle
  • Debris or moisture behind the lens
  • A failed module after an impact

What to do right now

  • Clean the lens properly, because a smear is responsible more often than anyone admits
  • Try each camera separately: wide, ultrawide and telephoto
  • Shake the phone gently and listen for a rattle, which points at the focus motor
  • Check whether the lens cover glass is cracked rather than the image being soft
Which one is yours

What you are seeing.

The same complaint covers several different faults. Find the line that matches and you have already narrowed it down.

  • Everything is soft, front and backOften the lens glass rather than the camera. Check it in a good light before booking anything.
  • Photos have haze or flare in bright lightClassic cracked or scratched lens glass. Light scatters through the damage.
  • It will not focus and hunts back and forthThe module. That is a replacement rather than a clean.
  • It rattles when you shake the phoneStabilisation damage after a drop. It usually means the module.
  • Only the ultrawide or telephoto is badOne module of several. Cheaper than it sounds and worth saying which.
  • It went blurry after a dropEither the lens glass or the module, and telling the two apart takes about a minute at the counter.
Before you spend anything

Work out which one it is.

Half the blurry cameras that come in here need the lens glass rather than the camera behind it, and the price difference is significant.

IfThe lens glass looks cracked or scratched
That is the cover glass, not the camera. It is the cheaper of the two by a distance and it is a common repair.
IfThe glass is clean and it still will not focus
The module. Replacement rather than a clean.
IfSomething rattles when you shake it
The stabilisation has been damaged. That is a module job.
IfOnly one of the lenses is affected
Say which. Phones have several modules and only the affected one needs replacing.
IfIt went soft after a screen repair elsewhere
The front camera sits near the display connectors and is easy to disturb. Worth checking before assuming the module failed.
IfIt is only bad in low light
Could be normal for the phone. Compare it against another phone of the same model before paying for anything.

If none of these is clearly yours, that is what the free diagnostic is for. It costs nothing and it is the step that stops people paying for the wrong repair.

The diagnostic

What we check at the bench.

  • Whether the lens cover or the module is at fault, which decides the price
  • Each camera in turn, at every focal length
  • Stabilisation, which fails separately and shows as blur in video
  • The board connector, since a partially seated camera behaves like a failed one
The money

What it costs.

Lens glass and camera module are two different prices, listed on your model's repair page. We tell you which one it is before anything is ordered.

Whatever it turns out to be, you get the price before anything is opened, and there is no fee if we cannot fix it. Every completed repair carries a 360-day warranty on the part we fitted and the work we did.

Asked all the time

Common questions.

Look at the glass over the lens in bright light at an angle. Cracks and deep scratches show up clearly, and if they are there that is almost always the cause.

No. Polishing removes material and leaves the glass optically worse than the crack did. Replacing the cover glass is the proper fix.

No. A camera repair does not touch storage.

Each lens has its own module and its own cover glass. Damage is usually to one of them rather than all.

Rear Camera Repair starts from €40 depending on the model. No fix, no fee, so if we cannot repair it you pay nothing.

Two different jobs. A cracked lens cover over the camera is a small part and a quick fix. Blurry photos, a black frame, or a camera that will not focus usually means the module behind it. The diagnostic tells us which, and it is free.

Yes when we fit a genuine or equivalent-grade module, which is what we quote for. We shoot test photos and video at every focal length before it goes back to you.

Yes. It makes no difference where a device came from, whether it was bought here, abroad or second hand. Bring it in.

Card or cash at the counter when you collect. You get a firm price before any work starts.

No. These are hardware repairs and we do not open, copy or erase anything on the device. Back it up first anyway, because any device that already has a fault can fail further while it is being worked on.

Excellent experience with the team in imend. My husband 50th birthday present was a phone charger and holder for your car and it wouldn't stay attached to his Audi dash. The guys in imend put two devices together to get it working. Very happy Hubbie and wife- lovely guys to work with and they even threw in a birthday charging gift.
