iPad will not charge

An iPad that will not charge is worth checking against the charger before anything else, because an iPad draws more current than a phone and will charge slowly or not at all from an underpowered plug. If it works on a laptop charger and not on the small one, the plug is the fault.

What causes it

  • Compacted lint in the port, which is the single most common cause and the cheapest to fix
  • A failed cable or charger, which fails invisibly at the strain point
  • A worn or bent port that no longer holds the connector
  • A battery at the end of its life, which can present as a charging fault

What to do right now

  • Try a different cable and a different plug that you know work
  • Shine a light into the port and compare it with the speaker grille beside it
  • Note whether it charges at an angle, intermittently, or not at all
  • Stop forcing the cable if it feels tight, because that bends contacts
The diagnostic

What we check at the bench.

  • Whether the device draws any current at all, which separates a board fault immediately
  • The port under a microscope for debris, wear and bent pins
  • The battery under load with a bench supply
  • Your own cable, because it is often the answer

Charging Port Repair starts from €110 depending on the model. No fix, no fee, so if we cannot repair it you pay nothing.

Often neither. The most common cause is packed lint in the port, which we clean out in a few minutes. Try a different cable and charger first. If it only charges when the cable is held at an angle, or not at all, the port itself is worn and needs replacing.

Whichever the device needs, and we tell you which after the diagnostic. A clean is quick and cheap. A worn or bent port is a soldered component on most models, so it is a bench job with heat and microscope work.

That is the classic symptom, yes, but check the cable first because a cable that has failed at the strain point does exactly the same thing. We test with both before quoting, and we will not sell you a port you do not need.

It varies by model more than any other repair. On some the port is on its own flex and lifts out; on others it is soldered to the board and needs heat and a microscope. The page price reflects which yours is.

Yes. Wireless charging uses a separate coil, so it is unaffected by port work, and a phone with a dead port that still charges wirelessly is a phone that is not urgent.

Bring it in and we do it again at no cost, for 360 days from the repair, on the part and the workmanship both. That does not cover new accidental damage, which we will always be straight with you about.

Card or cash at the counter when you collect. You get a firm price before any work starts.

For common faults on common models, yes, and the price is on the page you are reading. For anything with no clear symptom, liquid damage especially, nobody can price it honestly without opening it, so we do that for free first.
