iPhone will not charge

Lightning ports pack with pocket lint more than any other connector we see, because the contacts sit on the outside of the plug and the socket is a simple open cavity. On the iPhone 15 and later the port is USB-C, which protects the contacts but makes them harder to clear and easier to wreck by forcing a cable in at an angle. Either way, we try a clean before quoting for a port.

What causes it

  • Compacted lint in the port, which is the single most common cause and the cheapest to fix
  • A failed cable or charger, which fails invisibly at the strain point
  • A worn or bent port that no longer holds the connector
  • A battery at the end of its life, which can present as a charging fault

What to do right now

  • Try a different cable and a different plug that you know work
  • Shine a light into the port and compare it with the speaker grille beside it
  • Note whether it charges at an angle, intermittently, or not at all
  • Stop forcing the cable if it feels tight, because that bends contacts
The diagnostic

What we check at the bench.

  • Whether the device draws any current at all, which separates a board fault immediately
  • The port under a microscope for debris, wear and bent pins
  • The battery under load with a bench supply
  • Your own cable, because it is often the answer

Common questions.

Compacted lint in the port, which is the single most common cause and the cheapest to fix. A failed cable or charger, which fails invisibly at the strain point

Charging Port Repair starts from €35 depending on the model. No fix, no fee, so if we cannot repair it you pay nothing.

Nine times out of ten that is compacted lint in the port rather than a fault. It builds up invisibly over months. We clean it out in minutes and only quote for a port replacement if cleaning does not fix it.

Whichever the device needs, and we tell you which after the diagnostic. A clean is quick and cheap. A worn or bent port is a soldered component on most models, so it is a bench job with heat and microscope work.

That is the classic symptom, yes, but check the cable first because a cable that has failed at the strain point does exactly the same thing. We test with both before quoting, and we will not sell you a port you do not need.

It varies by model more than any other repair. On some the port is on its own flex and lifts out; on others it is soldered to the board and needs heat and a microscope. The page price reflects which yours is.

Yes. Wireless charging uses a separate coil, so it is unaffected by port work, and a phone with a dead port that still charges wirelessly is a phone that is not urgent.

Yes, with collection across Dublin, an invoice rather than a counter payment, and a single contact rather than a queue. There is a page for that with the details.

Most of the time, yes, if we have the part on the shelf. That covers common iPhone and Galaxy screens and batteries. Ring ahead on 085 200 1155 with your model if you are coming across the city and want to be sure.

No. The diagnostic is free whether you go ahead with the repair or not, and that is true for the quick check at the counter and the longer one on the bench.

No. These are hardware repairs and we do not open, copy or erase anything on the device. Back it up first anyway, because any device that already has a fault can fail further while it is being worked on.

For common faults on common models, yes, and the price is on the page you are reading. For anything with no clear symptom, liquid damage especially, nobody can price it honestly without opening it, so we do that for free first.

The screen stopped working on my iPhone 13 mini - it had recently been repaired elsewhere. I got a warm welcome in the shop, and a phone to borrow while mine was in for diagnostics and repair. An issue with the battery was also detected and I am very happy with the new screen and battery and appreciated the excellent service and communication.
