Using a cracked phone: when it is fine and when it is not
The short answer

What a crack actually does over time
Glass under tension keeps relieving that tension. Every time the phone warms in a pocket, cools on a table or flexes slightly in your hand, a crack advances a fraction. That is why a single line from one corner becomes a web over a few months without another drop.
