Fast charging: what it does, and what it costs you

The short answer

Fast charging negotiates a higher voltage with the phone, then tapers off as the battery fills. It does not damage a cell by itself; the heat it produces does. Charging fast in a cool room is fine. Charging fast in a hot car, in a thick case, every day, is what shortens a battery's life.

What is actually happening

A plain USB charger supplies five volts and the phone takes what current it can. Fast charging is a conversation: the charger and the phone agree on a higher voltage the cable and the phone's power circuitry can handle, and the phone draws more power as a result.

The phone controls the rate, not the charger. It charges hardest when the battery is nearly empty and tapers steadily as it fills, because pushing a full lithium cell hard is what damages it. That is why the last twenty per cent always takes disproportionately long and why the advertised figure is nearly always for reaching fifty per cent rather than a hundred.

It also means a bigger charger does not force more into a phone than the phone asks for. A 65W laptop charger on a phone rated for 20W delivers 20W.

The standards, and which ones matter to you

The practical version: a decent USB-C Power Delivery charger with PPS covers almost every phone in the house at close to full speed. The proprietary standards only reach their headline numbers with their own brick and their own cable, which is worth knowing before paying for a charger that will not deliver what it says.

Does it damage the battery?

Not directly. What ages a lithium cell is heat and time at high state of charge, and fast charging produces heat. So the honest answer is that fast charging is a cause of the thing that does the damage rather than the damage itself.

That distinction matters because it tells you what to change. You do not need to stop fast charging. You need to stop fast charging hot: out of the sun, out of a thick case if it gets warm, and off the dashboard in July.

If a phone is charging overnight anyway, there is nothing to gain from doing it fast. Most phones now handle this themselves by learning your alarm and finishing the last stretch slowly near morning, which is worth leaving switched on.

  • Take the case off if the phone gets hot on charge
  • Do not fast charge in direct sun or on a car dashboard
  • Overnight charging does not need to be fast; let the phone manage it
  • Gaming while fast charging is the worst everyday combination there is
  • Warm to the touch is normal, too hot to hold comfortably is not

Cables, and why they matter more than people think

A cable that cannot carry the current negotiated is where a lot of slow charging and a lot of heat comes from. USB-C cables vary enormously: some carry only 60W, some 240W, some carry no data at all, and almost none of them say so on the outside.

The proprietary fast standards make this worse, because several use a cable with extra conductors and will silently drop to a slower mode without it. A phone that charged in thirty minutes with its own cable and takes ninety with another is usually meeting exactly that.

A cable that gets warm along its length, rather than just at the plug, should be retired. So should any cable with a bent or discoloured connector, because that is the thing that damages a charging port.

Wireless charging

Wireless is convenient and it is the least efficient way to charge a phone. A meaningful share of the energy becomes heat, in the phone, against the battery, which is the one place you would rather not put heat.

It is fine for topping up on a desk. It is a poor choice for the main overnight charge in a warm room, and a genuinely bad one under a pillow or in a bed.

It also stops working if the back glass has been damaged and the coil underneath was hit, which is worth mentioning when you book a back glass repair.

Common questions.

Not by itself. Heat damages batteries and fast charging makes heat, so charging fast in a cool room is fine and charging fast in a hot car is not. If it is charging overnight anyway, there is nothing to gain from doing it quickly.

No. The phone negotiates and controls the rate, so a 65W charger delivers whatever the phone asks for and no more. A larger charger is safe and sometimes charges a phone at its full rate where a smaller one could not.

Check the cable and the plug first, then the port. Lint compacted at the bottom of a charging port is the single most common cause we see, and it is often a clean rather than a repair.

It is the least efficient method and the wasted energy becomes heat right next to the cell. It is fine for topping up on a desk and a poor choice for a warm overnight charge.

For USB Power Delivery, no; a good third-party charger works at full speed. For the proprietary standards on Oppo, OnePlus, Realme and Xiaomi, you generally do need their brick and their cable to get the headline speed.
