Board-level repair: what it is, and why most shops send it away
The short answer
A logic board fault is one where no replaceable part is broken; a component or a connection on the board itself has failed. Fixing it means working under a microscope with hot air and solder at component sizes under a millimetre. Most shops replace parts and send this away. It is done here.
Parts repair and board repair are different trades
Almost every repair people book is a parts repair: a screen, a battery, a port, a camera. The failed thing is a module, it unplugs or unsolders as a unit, and a new one goes in. That is skilled work and it is not the same skill as this.
A board fault is when nothing replaceable has failed. A capacitor has shorted, a power management chip has stopped regulating, a tiny track under the surface has corroded through, or a connector's pads have lifted off the board. There is no module to swap.
Fixing that means diagnosing which component on a board of several hundred is at fault, then removing and replacing something that may be under a millimetre across, under a microscope, without damaging the twenty neighbours within two millimetres of it.
What the work actually looks like
The power supply is the diagnostic tool that matters most. A healthy board draws a characteristic amount of current at rest and a different amount when told to boot. A board drawing far too much has a short; a board drawing nothing has an open circuit before the point that would wake it. That reading narrows a board of hundreds of components to a handful before anything is touched.
- A stereo microscope, because the components are smaller than the eye resolves
- Hot air at a controlled temperature and flow, to lift a chip without lifting its neighbours
- A fine-tipped iron, flux, and solder paste measured in grams
- A bench power supply, to watch exactly how much current a board draws and where it goes
- A thermal camera, because a shorted component gets warm before it does anything else visible
- Schematics and boardview files for the model, which tell you what should be where
When a phone is worth it
When the alternative is a new phone and the fault is one component. A power management chip is a few euro; the phone is several hundred. That is straightforward arithmetic and it is why this work exists.
When the data is the point. A phone that will not boot with the only copy of somebody's photos on it is worth board work that a phone with a good backup is not, and people are usually clear about which they have.
When it is a console. HDMI ports on games consoles are the single most common board-level job here, they have a very high success rate, and the cost is a fraction of a replacement console.
When it is not worth it, we say so. An older phone with liquid damage across several areas of the board can be technically repairable and still a bad idea, and we would rather lose that job than take it.
What we will not promise
A fixed price before diagnosis. A board fault has to be found before it can be quoted, and any shop quoting one over the phone is guessing.
A timescale on an intermittent fault. Something that fails once a day under load has to be caught failing, and that occasionally means leaving a board running.
Success on liquid damage. Corrosion is progressive and a board that has been wet for weeks may have damage in places nothing reaches. We will tell you the realistic odds before you commit rather than afterwards.

The faults we see most
That backlight row is worth reading twice. A phone or laptop with a black screen that still shows a very faint image under a torch has a backlight fault, not a dead panel, and it is a fraction of the price of the screen somebody may have quoted.

When the alternative is replacing the device, usually yes, because the failed component is often worth a few euro. When the data matters, frequently yes. On an older phone with widespread liquid corrosion, often not, and we will say so.
