True Tone, night modes and why a new screen can look different
The short answer
True Tone reads the colour of the light in the room and shifts the screen's white point to match, so paper stays looking like paper. The calibration for it is stored against the panel that shipped with the phone, which is why a replacement can lose it unless the data is transferred.
What it is actually doing
An ambient light sensor measures not just how bright the room is but what colour the light is. A kitchen under warm bulbs is far more orange than daylight, and a screen showing a fixed cold white in that room looks blue and slightly wrong.
True Tone, and the equivalents on other phones, shifts the screen's white point toward the colour of the room. The effect is that white on screen keeps looking like white paper on the desk beside it, whatever the light is doing.
It is different from night mode, which shifts everything warm on a schedule to reduce blue light in the evening. One is reacting to the room; the other is following the clock. Most phones have both and they work together.
Why a repair can lose it
Every panel comes out of the factory slightly different, so each one is measured and its individual calibration is stored so the phone knows how that specific screen renders colour. Without that data, adaptive colour cannot know what it is adjusting from.
When a screen is replaced, that data has to move across or be regenerated. With the right tooling it usually can. Without it, the feature disappears from settings entirely rather than working badly, which is at least honest.
This is one of the things we check and tell you about before starting, because on some models and some part grades it cannot be kept, and finding that out afterwards is not acceptable.
What else can look different after a screen repair
Most of that settles or stops being noticeable within a few days, which is not the same as it being imaginary. If a screen looks wrong to you after a repair, say so; a panel that is genuinely off is a panel we would rather change than argue about.
- Slightly warmer or cooler white, most visible against another phone of the same model
- A different brightness curve at the very low end, where panels differ most
- Auto-brightness reacting a little differently until the phone relearns your adjustments
- Night mode looking stronger or weaker, because it is applied on top of a different base
- A parts notice in settings, which is about pairing rather than colour
If you want to check it
Open a plain white page, put the phone beside a sheet of paper under a warm lamp, and turn True Tone on and off in settings. The difference is obvious once you have seen it and easy to miss until then.
If the setting is missing entirely after a repair, that is the calibration rather than a fault, and it is worth asking about.
