What actually shortens a phone's life, from the bench. Most of it is heat, and most of the rest is the case you did not buy.
Mon to Sat 10 to 6A lithium battery ages fastest when it is hot, and the two things that make a phone hot are charging it fast and using it while it charges. Doing both at once, in a car in July, on a dashboard mount, is the worst thing you can routinely do to a battery.
You do not need to baby it. Charge it when it needs charging. But taking it off a wireless pad when it is warm, and keeping it out of direct sun, buys you months.
Most phones we see were not dropped from height. They slid off something. A grippy case prevents more breakages than a thick one, because it stops the drop happening rather than surviving it.
A raised lip around the screen and the camera does the rest. The camera glass stands proud of the back on most phones, so it takes the impact first, and it is far cheaper to replace a lens protector than a camera module.
A tempered glass protector is the cheapest insurance in the shop. It is worth having and it is not a substitute for a case.
A large share of the phones that arrive here not charging have nothing wrong with them. The port is packed with pocket lint, compressed a little further every time the cable goes in, until the plug can no longer reach the pins.
Every few months, with the phone off, take a wooden toothpick and clear it out. Not a pin, not a paperclip, not compressed air. The pins bend, and once they are bent the clean becomes a replacement.
If a device goes in water, turn it off and leave it off. Do not charge it, do not press the buttons to see if it works, and do not put it in rice. Rice does not draw moisture out of a sealed device; it holds the phone in a humid pocket and gives corrosion more time.
Corrosion is progressive, so the sooner it is opened and cleaned the more survives. A phone that seems fine after a soaking often fails one to three weeks later, and that delay is the corrosion catching up.
The single most upsetting conversation in this shop is not about a price. It is telling somebody their photos are on a board that will not power on and there is no backup.
Turn on the automatic backup your phone already has and check once that it is actually running. That is the whole task, and it takes two minutes.
Not on its own. Heat does the damage, and fast charging makes heat. A phone that fast charges cool is fine; a phone that fast charges hot, in a case, in the sun, ages faster. If it is charging overnight anyway, there is nothing to gain from doing it fast.
No. That was true of an older chemistry and has not been true for a long time. Lithium batteries prefer being topped up to being run flat, and a full discharge is harder on them than a partial one.
For glass, yes, and they are the cheapest thing in the shop. They will not save a screen from a hard drop onto a corner, because that damage travels through the frame rather than the front. They are very good at scratches and at the small knocks that turn into cracks later.
Longer than most people keep them. A battery is usually the first thing to go, at two to three years, and it is the cheapest repair that makes an old phone feel new. Beyond that it is usually software support rather than hardware that decides when a phone is finished.
