The MacBook Pro 14-inch (M1 Pro/Max) arrived in 2021, with a 14.2 inch Liquid Retina XDR, mini-LED display and the M1 Pro or M1 Max chip. The ports are MagSafe 3, three Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, SD card and headphone and it unlocks with Touch ID in the power button. There is an aluminium frame. The redesign that brought back MagSafe, HDMI and the SD card slot, dropped the Touch Bar and put a notch in the screen. A2442 is the model sold here.

What this fixes

Why people book a speaker & microphone repair.

  • Music and video are quiet or cracklingThe loudspeaker at the bottom of the phone, and often just packed with pocket lint.
  • It got quiet after a soakingWater in the mesh. Sometimes it dries out, often the driver has already gone.
  • Sound only works on speakerphoneThat points at the earpiece rather than anything upstream, and it saves a diagnostic.
  • Callers cannot hear you but voice notes record fineDifferent microphones for different jobs. It narrows this to the call microphone.
  • It went quiet gradually over monthsVery often compacted lint rather than a failed speaker. A careful clean is sometimes the whole repair.
  • Sound cuts out when the phone is squeezedA connector rather than the speaker. Worth opening and checking before ordering a part.
Before you spend anything

Is it definitely the speaker?

Half the phones that arrive here with no sound have nothing wrong with the speaker.

IfCallers cannot hear you but voice notes record fine
Different microphones. That tells us which one to look at and makes it a smaller job.
IfIt has been silent since a screen repair somewhere else
The earpiece sits in the display assembly and is easy to disturb. Bring it in.
IfIt stopped after the phone got wet
Assess the liquid damage first. A new speaker in a corroding phone is money wasted.
IfIt has been silent since a screen repair elsewhere
The earpiece sits in the display assembly and is easy to disturb. Bring it in rather than assuming the part failed.
IfIt stopped after the phone got wet
Assess the liquid damage first. A new speaker in a corroding phone is money wasted.

If you are not sure which of these you have, that is what the free diagnostic is for. It costs nothing and it is the step that stops people paying for the wrong repair.

What parts do we fit?

Where Apple supplies a service part for this component, that is what goes in. Where it does not, we fit premium aftermarket and say so. Which of the two you are getting is settled before you agree to anything, and the 360-day warranty does not change between them.

Nobody here will call a part original when it is not. If what fits your laptop is premium aftermarket, you hear that word at the counter rather than reading it on a docket afterwards.

Genuine, OEM and aftermarket: what the words actually mean

    What the Diagnostic includes

    • The speaker or microphone replaced, or cleaned where that is enough
    • Every audio path tested, not only the one that failed
    • A real call made before the phone goes back
    • 360-day warranty on the part and the workmanship

Nothing extra gets done and charged for without you saying yes to it. Where the diagnostic turns up a second fault, the work stops there and you hear the price before it goes any further.

Diagnostics from €25. A clean-up check is free.

Dublin collection and return is available on weekdays if you cannot make it in. Nothing about the price or the cover changes because the courier brought it.

    Choose the part

Two tiers, named before you agree.

Speakers and microphones are small parts and the tier gap on them is the smallest on this list.

    iMEND Premium

    Original or manufacturer-grade part

The manufacturer's own driver. Worth specifying on a phone you intend to keep a long time.

    Priced at the counter

    Value Edition

Premium aftermarket, tested to the same standard

Made to the original specification. On a speaker this is hard to fault and it is what most of these repairs use.

    Priced at the counter

The price for this repair is confirmed after a diagnostic. Which tier suits your device is a conversation at the counter, and the price for each is on the table before you decide. The 360-day warranty is the same on both, because we would not offer a tier we did not think would last.

Before any of this, let us look at the grille. Compacted pocket lint muffles a loudspeaker very effectively, and where a clean fixes it that is what you pay for and no part goes in at all.

The parts we use, in full

    How we do it

From the counter to back in your hand.

Tell us what it is doing

Walk in during opening hours or book ahead, whichever suits. Tell us what the device is actually doing rather than what you think the fix is.

    Diagnostic

Before a part is ordered we establish what has really gone wrong. It is free, and it is the reason people do not leave here having paid for the wrong thing.

    You approve the price

The price is confirmed to you before anything begins, and it does not move afterwards unless you agree to something else.

    The repair is carried out

Carried out here in Drumcondra rather than sent away, by people who do this repair daily.

    Bench testing

Nothing is handed back untested. The repaired part and its neighbours are all checked first.

    Back in your hands

Pick it up from Richmond Road or have it couriered back across Dublin. Either way it carries the 360-day warranty.

    Before it goes back

    What we test every time.

A repair is not finished when the part is fitted. It is finished when the things around it have been checked.

    A real phone call

Both directions. It is the only test that proves the earpiece and the call microphone together.

    Proximity

Checked at the same time, since it sits beside the earpiece and gets disturbed with it.

    Earpiece and loudspeaker separately

They are different parts and a fault in one says nothing about the other.

    Every microphone

Call, video and the noise-cancelling one, because they are used for different things.

Is anything on the device at risk?

We are replacing a part, not reading a phone. Your photos, messages and accounts are not something this job touches.

The one place it comes up is testing. A repair is not finished until it has been used, and using a locked device means a passcode. You are welcome to withhold it, and we will tell you which checks that leaves undone rather than quietly skipping them. A passcode you do give us lives on a paper docket that gets shredded, never in a database.

Back it up first if you can. A device that has taken a knock has had its storage shaken whether or not anything looks wrong, and a backup is free insurance against the day that matters.

    What about the water resistance?

After any repair, ours included, work on the assumption that the device is no longer water resistant.

The rating on the box was measured once, on a sealed unit, in controlled conditions. It was never a promise about the device three years later. Adhesive hardens, seals compress and a single drop can break the seal without leaving a mark you would notice.

We reseal with fresh adhesive and it does a real job: rain, splashes and a wet counter are all fine. A submerged phone is not, and we would rather say that plainly than let you find out.

If yours goes near water regularly, say so at the counter and we will tell you what the adhesive covers and what it does not.

    The 360-day warranty

Every completed repair is covered for 360 days on the part and the workmanship. If the display we fitted fails, or the fitting was at fault, we put it right at no charge.

What it does not cover is a new accident. A phone dropped again after the repair, fresh physical damage, liquid damage, or a fault in a part we did not touch, all sit outside it. That is the same limit any honest repair warranty has.

No fix, no fee. The diagnostic is from €25, and if the repair does not happen you pay nothing.

Three ways to get it to us

    • Walk in to Drumcondra4 Richmond Road, Dublin 3. No appointment. Mon to Sat 10:00 to 18:00, closed Sunday. Most phone screens and batteries done in 15 to 45 minutes while you wait.
    • We collect and returnDoor to door across Dublin, Monday to Friday, usually 2 to 4 working days. The repair takes the same time; the courier is the difference.
    • Send it in yourselfPost it to the shop with a tracked, insured service and a note with your number. We cannot cover a parcel in transit, and that is the honest trade-off for the route existing.

Same repair price and the same 360-day warranty on all three. The only thing that changes is how the device travels.

    Asked all the time

    MacBook Pro 14-inch (M1 Pro/Max) screen questions.

We quote it after a diagnostic, from €25, because the price depends on what we find. No fix, no fee, so if we cannot repair it you pay nothing.

Usually same day. If the diagnostic turns up something else, or a part has to be ordered, we tell you before you commit rather than after.

A clean-up check is free. Any other diagnostic on the MacBook Pro 14-inch (M1 Pro/Max) is from €25, and you are told the cost before it starts. No additional paid work happens without your approval.

Very often, yes. The loudspeaker grille packs with pocket lint and it muffles sound long before it silences it. We clean and test before quoting a replacement, and where the clean fixes it that is what you pay for.

There is more than one microphone in the phone and they are used for different things. That symptom usually points at the call microphone specifically, which is a smaller job than it sounds.

Sometimes, because on most models the earpiece is part of the display assembly. Tell us what the sound is doing when you book and we will check both together rather than doing one and finding the other.

Gently, with a soft dry brush and the phone switched off. Never a pin and never compressed air into the grille.

Sometimes, because on most phones the earpiece is part of the display assembly. Tell us what the sound is doing when you book so we check both.

A speaker or microphone is one of the cheaper parts in a phone, so usually yes.

That is the microphone, which is a different part. Sound you cannot hear is the earpiece or the loudspeaker. Tell us which way round it is and we will know where to look, though the diagnostic confirms it either way.

Often that is dirt rather than a fault. Speaker mesh packs with pocket lint and it deadens the sound gradually enough that you do not notice until it is bad. A clean is quick and cheap, and we try that before quoting for a part.

For most screen and battery work, 15 to 45 minutes, and people wait in the shop. Anything that has to come apart further, or that we want to run for a while before handing back, we tell you the day rather than guess at an hour.

On older models, yes. On Apple silicon and most recent Intel MacBooks, memory and storage are soldered to the board and cannot be changed. Tell us the model and we will say straight away.

iMEND is an independent repair service. Brand and model names are used only to describe the devices we repair. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or an authorised service provider for any manufacturer.

    Why bring it here

An independent workshop, not a kiosk.

We are a dedicated repair bench in Dublin 3. That means we take on work authorised channels turn away, and we tell you honestly when something is not worth fixing.

    Diagnosed, not guessed

Every device is tested before we quote, so you are not paying for a part that was never the problem.

    Parts that last

Genuine or OEM-grade components chosen for your model. We tell you which is going in before we start.

    Your data stays yours

Hardware-only repairs. We never read, copy or move anything on your device.

    No fix, no fee

If we cannot repair it, there is nothing to pay. Diagnostics from €25, no handling charge.
